I thought this was a good moment to pause and look around us.
There are people around us who did better at promoting peace and compassion.
How did they do it?
To find out, I looked through the Encyclopaedia of Peaceful Societies: cas.uab.edu/peacefulsocieties/societies/
There, you will find:
In one instance at least, they forgave a criminal who killed some of their own and invited the parents of the criminal to mourn with them. They resolve conflicts by being silent, sometimes for days.
They are humble and repress from showing off. They do not make invitations or promises and do not ask questions. They use humor and hints to diffuse conflicts.
They take great pride in the peacefulness of their society. They do not blame others for their misfortunes. They use a neutral third party to solve their conflicts.
The mom reassures the embryo in her belly about the world and teaches it her love for the forest.
Kids learn cooperative games rather than competitive ones.
The Encyclopaedia introduces us to many other peaceful nations.
What they all have in common?
Their lack of individualism and their spirit of cooperation and gratefulness.
See for yourself.
